USF Men’s and Women’s Tennis Clean up Conference Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I., May 2, 2019 – After an impressive season for both of USF's tennis teams, the Bulls picked up seven conference awards between the men's and women's teams.
 
USF men's tennis' head coach Ashley Fisher was named coach of the year, Alberto Barroso-Campos was named player of the year and was an all-conference singles selection, and Chase Ferguson was named the freshman of the year. USF women's tennis' Laura Pellicer Perello was named The American Freshman of the Year as well as to the all-conference team with senior Ana Roman Dominguez who was a unanimous selection.
 
USF senior Alberto Barroso-Campos, who led the Bulls to their fifth American Athletic Conference title in six years, has been chosen as The American's 2019 Men's Tennis Player of the Year by the league's 10 head coaches.
 
USF's Chase Ferguson, who stepped into the No. 2 spot on the Bulls' singles ladder in his first season, was named as The American's Freshman of the Year. USF head coach Ashley Fisher, who led the Bulls to the 2019 American title, was chosen by his counterparts as The American Coach of the Year.
 
A native of Montijo, Spain, Barroso-Campos was named The American Player of the Year after he went 20-2 in dual matches at No. 1 singles in the 2018-19 season. He went 5-2 against nationally ranked opponents and was chosen as the Most Outstanding Player of the American Athletic Conference Championship. Barroso-Campos, is ranked No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA national singles rankings, was selected as a top-16 seed in singles for the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships and leads the Bulls into the NCAA team championship, which begins Friday.
 
Barroso-Campos becomes the fifth American Player of the Year from USF, joining three-time winner Roberto Cid (2014-16) and 2017 winner Sasha Gozun.
 
Ferguson, who hails from Melbourne, Australia, takes a 14-6 dual-match record into the NCAA Championship, playing primarily at No. 2 singles. Ferguson won the clinching match in the American Athletic Conference Championship final against top-seeded UCF, helping the Bulls to a 4-3 victory. Ferguson is the first player from USF to be named The American's Freshman of the Year.
 
Fisher was chosen as Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after he led the Bulls, who were seeded No. 2 in the American Championship, to their second title under Fisher's watch. Fisher has led the Bulls to a 17-7 record entering the NCAA tournament and has the Bulls ranked No. 37 in the Oracle/ITA rankings.
 
Barroso-Campos was additionally named to The American's all-conference team in singles for the second consecutive season.
 
USF's Pellicer Perello was chosen as one of the league's Freshmen of the Year, becoming the second USF player to be so named (Ana Roman Dominguez, 2016). The Gandia, Spain, native went 15-8 in dual matches, including a 6-0 mark at the No. 4 position, to help USF reach the final match of The American Championship.
 
Roman Dominguez was one of two unanimous selections to The American's all-conference team. The Spaniard went 13-8 in singles this season with four ranked wins.
