Bulls Fall to No. 29 Baylor, 4-3
INDIAN WELLS, Calif., MARCH 16, 2018 – The USF men's tennis team faced the No. 29-ranked Baylor Bears in the opener of the three-day BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Challenge and took it down to the wire before falling, 4-3, in heartbreaking fashion.
After dropping the doubles point,
Pierre Luquet (Drauignan, France) gave the Bulls their first point of the night, making quick work of Baylor's Will Little, 6-2, 6-1 in match number five.
No. 69
Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) defeated the No. 66-ranked Bjoern Petersen in a straight sets battle, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 for the second Bulls point of the night on court one. Barroso-Campos has now won five straight singles matches and is an impressive 9-3 on the season for USF.
The third Bulls point came on court three, where
Peter Bertran (Santiago, Dominican Republic) outlasted Sven Lah in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Bertran has now won three straight singles matchups dating back to the Utah State match last Sunday.
The heartbreaking loss came on a third set tiebreaker on court two, where
Grayson Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) battled No. 123 Matias Soto to the wire before falling 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).
The Bears captured the doubles point by winning the first two matches over the Bulls. In the third suspended match, the USF duo of Barroso-Campos and Goldin had a 5-4 lead over the No. 2 ranked doubles pair in the country, Will Little and Johannes Schretter. The team of Barroso-Campos and Goldin came into the Indian Wells match clicking, winning six of their last eight matches together.
The loss snapped a two match winning streak for the Bulls. Previously, the Bulls had defeated Utah State and Pepperdine in back-to-back matches.
