Bulls Drop Conference Match Against Memphis, 4-0
MEMPHIS (APRIL 6, 2018) – The USF men's tennis team showed great boost of energy before falling to Memphis, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
In singles action, USF's No. 77 ranked junior
Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) showed off his talents by leading Memphis's No. 47 ranked Ryan Peniston, 6-4, 3-0, before leaving the match unfinished in the second set due to a "clinch/clinch" match scenario.
Bulls sophomores
Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France), and
Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) both were looking to mount major comebacks for USF, as they both trailed, 6-1, 5-4, on singles courts No. 4 and No.5, before their matches were both claimed unfinished as well.
Senior
Grayson Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) came up short against his opponent Kai Lemke at the No. 3 singles spot, 6-3, 6-2. The Memphis court win clinched the 4-0 victory for the Tigers.
In doubles, Wojcik and
Peter Bertran (Santiago, Dominican Republic) teamed up for a tight contest against the Tigers pair of Lemke and Felix Rauch. Bertran and Wojcik battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie up the match at three sets a piece. The match was declared unfinished as Memphis clinched the doubles point by winning on courts No.1 and No.3.
Quotable:
Head coach Ashley Fisher on the match…
"Memphis is playing some quality tennis right now and they were just too good today. We had some positive individual performances. For Alberto to come out not 100% underdone from practice and be on top of an opponent like Ryan Peniston was pretty special. We will continue working, searching and doing the right things to get healthy and I believe this group has some good tennis left to play."
