Men’s Basketball (1992-96)
Chucky Atkins was one of college basketball’s premier point guards at USF from 1992-96 before becoming just the second player in program history to have his jersey number retired on Feb. 10, 2001.
A four-year starter for the Bulls, Atkins played in 111 games and missed just two starts due to an injury. He is USF’s career leader in three-point attempts (674) and ranks second in program history in made three-pointers (244) in addition to sitting in sixth on the Bulls’ all-time scoring list with 1,619 points. Atkins was an all-conference selection in Conference USA and the Metro Conference after earning a spot on the Metro’s all-freshman team in 1993.
Atkins also ranks in USF’s all-time top 10 in career point average (14.6 ppg, tied for 10th), made field goals (526, seventh), field goal attempts (1,284, sixth), made free throws (323, fifth), free throw attempts (438, sixth), three-point field goal percentage (.362, eighth), season assists (196 in 1994-95, tied for second), season scoring average (19.3 ppg in 1995-96, tied for sixth), season scoring (541 points in 1995-96, 10th) and season three-pointers made (84 in 1994-95, second; 82 in 1995-96, third).
Atkins averaged a career-high 19.3 points as a senior and tied the program's previous single-season assist record with 196 as a junior, leading the Metro Conference with 6.5 assists per game in 1994-95. Atkins finished second among Metro scoring leaders that season with a 16.8 points per game, falling one-half point shy of becoming only the second player in Metro history to lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season.
Atkins became the 11th USF player to score 1,000 points and just the fourth to do so prior to his senior season. The guard's USF career averages included 14.6 points and 4.7 assists per game, and he was one of the first two Bulls to score 1,600 points and dish out 500 assists in a career. Atkins earned C-USA all-conference second team honors in 1995-96. He also was named to the All-Metro second team in 1994-95 after collecting Metro All-Freshman Team honors in 1992-93.
In addition to his collegiate career, Atkins averaged nine points and three assists for Team USA as the Americans claimed the gold medal at the 1995 World University Games. An 11-year NBA veteran, Atkins played for eight different teams from 1999-2010, posting career averages of 9.9 points and 3.4 assists in 696 games (325 starts).
Atkins was inducted into the USF Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.
