Football Looking to Avoid Three-Straight Losses
If the USF football team is to avoid a third-consecutive loss for the first time since 1997 (USF's inaugural season), the Bulls will have to knock off nationally ranked Louisville (15th AP, 18th USA Today/ESPN) on the road this Friday night. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN starting at 8 p.m. It can also be heard on WTBN 570 and 910 in Tampa Bay.
With its 42-35 loss to Army this past Saturday, USF lost a second-straight home game, something it had never done before. The fashion in which the Bulls lost was also something uncustomary in USF history. The Bulls twice had 14-point leads, including 28-14 late in the third quarter. But Army scored 22 fourth-quarter points - a record against USF - to secure the win.
USF does continue to develop its strongest ground game in school history, rushing for a record 334 yards in the Army loss. The total included 200 yards from Andre Hall, who became only the second-ever USF runner to do that (Dyral McMillan did it twice) and the first-ever against a I-A opponent.
Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss
The USF men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to the Cincinnati Bearcats, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Gettler Stadium
A goal by Cincinnati's Wiremu Patrick gave the Bearcats a late 1-0 lead in the 76th minute.
The Bearcats outshot the Bulls 19-7 (10-1 in the first half) on the evening. Of USF's seven shots, only three were on frame. Freshman Freddy Hall made the first start of his USF career, recording six saves in the losing effort.
The loss marks the first defeat for USF this season, snapping a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2) to start the year. The shutout snaps a 15-game scoring streak for the Bulls, dating back to Oct. 24, 2003.
The loss drops Head Coach George Kiefer's record to 0-3-1 all-time versus Cincinnati.
USF will next travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face the UAB Blazers on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Game time is 7 p.m.
Volleyball Splits Weekend Conference Matches
The USF volleyball team fell one big play short in a 3-1 loss to Marquette Friday night but rebounded with a decisive 3-0 win over DePaul on Saturday afternoon.
After taking the first game of the match from the Golden Eagles on Friday, the Bulls faltered in games two and three, allowing Marquette to gain a 2-1 advantage. The Bulls fought hard, though, in game three, and on three occasions the Golden Eagles sat on match point, but the Bulls had an answer for them every time. It was the final match point situation the Bulls couldn't pull out of, though, after a USF attack error.
USF finished the match with a .231 team hitting percentage and were led by junior Flavia Silveira with 19 kills, despite having none after game one. She led three players in double digits as Williams notched 13 and freshman Kristina Fabris had 14. Williams led the Bulls defensively with 16 digs for a double-double, and Silveira had 12 digs for the Bulls' other double-double.
With five block assists in the match, Fabris led the team at the net for a total of 16.5 points.
Against DePaul on Saturday, the Bulls came out firing and easily handled the Blue Demons, despite having to use a 21-4 run to close out game three after falling into a 19-9 hole.
With a season-high-tying nine team blocks the Bulls were able to hold the Blue Demons to a .102 hitting percentage, forcing them into 22 errors. USF itself had 53 kills, 15 more than DePaul, and a .184 hitting percentage for the match.
Defensively, against the number two digging team in the conference, the Bulls collected 78 digs to DePaul's 62, with five players in double-digits led by Stalbaum with 19. USF's 78 digs fell just two shy of its season high of 80, which were collected during a five-game match against East Carolina on Oct. 3.
Freshman Michelle Stalbaum led all hitters with 17 kills and was followed closely by Silveira with 15.
The Bulls play their first non-conference home match of the season at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, then host UAB at 7 p.m. on Friday and Florida A&M at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Bulls Split Games with Memphis and Saint Louis
On Friday, the USF women's soccer team posted its first home win of the season and its third-straight victory, shutting out visiting Memphis, 4-0.
The Bulls' Katie Reed had her best offensive performance of the season, tallying a goal and two assists on the night. Reed scored first for the Bulls when she burned the ball into the net off a cross by Danielle Malkin in the fourth minute. Erica Lewis, Michelle Buskey and Jenny Mulvihill all found the back of the net against the C-USA third-ranked Tigers
USF netminder Breck Bankester had a solid outing against the Tigers, making three saves and posting her fourth shutout of the season.
On Sunday, the visiting Saint Louis Billikens extended their win streak to six, beating the Bulls, 2-0, and ending the Bulls three-game win streak.
The Billikens dominated the Bulls in shots in the first period, recording eight to USF's two. However, the Bulls' offense played solid in the second half, out-shooting Saint Louis seven to four. Katie Reed led the Bulls in shots with three.
USF continues C-USA action when it hits the road to play Houston on Friday at 8 p.m. and TCU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Women's Golf Returns to Action
The USF women's golf team plays in its third tournament and its first since a third place finish in the Beacon Woods Invitational two weeks ago when it participates in the Lady Paladin Invitational, Oct. 22-24, at Furman.
Sophomore Daniella Ronderos has led the USF efforts thus far with two top 10 appearances this year. She leads the team with a 75.5 stroke average in six rounds of play.
Men's Golf Awaits November Tournament After 10th-Place Finish at Gary Koch Intercollegiate
After a disappointing first round at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate at Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, the USF men's golf team rebounded nicely in the second and third rounds and finished 10th in the 15 team field. The Bulls had been tied for last after round one and moved as high as seventh after round two.
Kentucky won the team title with a 54-hole 872, 26 shots ahead of USF. Greg O'Mahoney led the Bulls with a 222, finishing in a tie for 19th place, nine shots behind medalist Mark Blakefield of Kentucky.
The team now awaits the Fall Beach Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala., Nov. 1-2.
Cross Country Teams Take Part in Pre-NCAA Meet
The USF women's and men's cross country teams got back into the thick of their schedule this past weekend taking part in the Indiana State University Pre-NCAA Meet held at the Laverne Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The Sycamores will host the NCAA Championships at the same site on November 22.
On the women's side the Bulls competed in the Blue Division, which included some of the premier cross-country teams in the nation. USF finished 24th out of 37 schools with 637 points.
The Bulls placed three runners in the top 100 led by Christa Benton, who finished the race 38th with a time of 21:32.1, while Bente General took 60th in 21:49.2. Jessica Hellender rounded out the top 100 runners finishing 79th in 22:01.8.
The USF men finished 12th out of 13 teams with 306 points. Ryan Thomas led the Bulls with a 112th-place finish in 26:47. Derek Lincoln finished 141st in a time of 27:15.1, and Nick Ferrer placed 161st in 27:41.7.
USF will be in action again at the Conference USA Championships on Oct. 30 in Chicago, Ill.
Barton, Jager Make an Early Exit at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships
The USF men's tennis team's trip to Memphis was a short one as only freshman Marc Jager made it past the first round of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Memphis, Tenn.
Jager advanced to the round of 64 by defeating Karim Alayli of Ole Miss, 7-6, 6-1. In the round of 64, Jager faced the No. 9 seed in the tournament, Georgia's Matias Ormaza. Jager battled hard but Ormaza proved to be too much, winning in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
Also playing an opponent from Ole Miss was junior Federico Barton, who just couldn't keep pace with Bram ten Berge, dropping his match to the Rebel, 6-1, 6-2.
The duo didn't fair any better in doubles play, losing to Alabama's Billy Mertz and R.J. Murray, 8-6.
The Bulls' next tournament is the annual USF Invitational. USF will welcome teams from Bethune Cookman, Stetson and South Alabama. The three-day tournament begins at noon on Friday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts and lasts throughout the weekend.
Sailing Finishes Third at Jack Wood Trophy
After sitting in first place through day one of the Jack Wood Trophy at Dartmouth, the USF sailing team finished third overall out of 12 teams with a total of 170 points in the two-division regatta.
In the "A" division, the duo of Kevin Reali and Ashley Reynolds finished first with a total of 78 points in the 20 races, which included six first-place finishes. In the "B" division Andrew Blom and Katie Beiser finished fifth with 111 total points and 11 top-five finishes.
Brown took home first place with 170 total points while host Dartmouth came in second with 172 points.
