TAMPA, Fla. ? USF sophomore defensive end George Selvie and senior cornerback Mike Jenkins were named First Team All-Americans by the American
Football Coaches Association.
The honors are the first for USF since it has been a member of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as the Division I).
Selvie and Jenkins were the only players from the BIG EAST selected and the only from a Florida based school to make the team.
“We're excited for both of them,” said USF head coach Jim Leavitt. “Both are tremendous players, have great character and both represent USF in the right way . It's a tribute to everything that is happening at the University of South Florida.”
Selvie is currently a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award, given to the top college defender, and the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the top defensive end. He has led all NCAA FBS players in tackles for loss all season and currently is just a half TFL away from the NCAA record with 31.5. He also has 14.5 sacks, second in the NCAA.
Selvie is the only sophomore on the team and the second youngest player on the teams. Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree is a freshman.
“What a blessing,” said Selvie. “I didn't see this stuff coming, I was just focused on football and school. I never set out to be named an All-American, I just wanted to win games and contribute to the team. It's a tremendous honor and one I will try my very best to live up to every time I step on the field.”
Jenkins is considered the top NFL prospect at the cornerback position. The lock-down defender has three interceptions and 12 pass breakups all while being game-planned around most of the season.
“That is a humbling,” said Jenkins. “So many things have happened here at USF this season that have never happened before. What an honor to join George as the first All-Americans at this level for USF and to be the representatives for the BIG EAST. It is really beyond words what this means to me and what I know it means to George.”
USF had two First Team All-Americans as a I-AA team - Bill Gramatica (AFCA First Team, AP Second Team.) and Tony Umholtz (AP First Team). Former Bulls Andre Hall (SI.com), J.R. Reed (SI.com).
The All-American duo has helped lead USF to its first appearance in the Brut Sun Bowl, which will be played in El Paso, Texas on Dec. 31. USF tied a school -record for wins with a 9-3 mark. They will attempt to achieve the first 10 win season in program history in El Paso.
