TAMPA - ESPN.com has unveiled its BIG EAST all-freshman team and has honored four Bulls.
On the offensive side of the ball, BIG EAST blogger Brian Bennett selected quarterback B.J. Daniels and offensive tackle Mark Popek. On defense, linebacker Sam Barrington and cornerback Kayvon Webster were chosen.
Daniels shares the QB honor with Rutgers freshman Tom Savage. Daniels has posted impressive numbers. He leads the team in rushing yards with 798 and rushing touchdowns with nine. He is within striking distance of Matt Grothe's program records for rushing yards and TDs by a quarterback. Grothe set the yards record at 872 in 2007 and the rushing TDs record at 10 in 2007.
Popek has played in every game this season and started each of the last four games. The 6-7, 305 pound lineman has prototypical size for the position and a wealth of potential.
Unlike redshirt-freshman Daniels and Popek, Barrington and Webster are true-freshman. Both have played extensively this season with Barrington registering his first start against UConn and Webster earning a starting spot on six occasions.
Barrington is eighth on the team with 38 tackles and two tackles for loss. He played nearly every snap in the regular season finale against UConn and registered a career-high six tackles.
Webster has 30 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery this season.
The Bulls will begin preparations and practice for the International Bowl on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. Per NCAA rules, USF is allowed to practice 16 times prior to their Jan. 2 bowl game against Northern Illinois.
The USF coaching staff will use the practices to work the young and redshirt players , while also implementing new wrinkles both offensively and defensively.
