TAMPA - The Sporting News has released?its 2009?BIG EAST Freshmen Awards and has honored two Bulls, one on the offense side of the ball and one on defense.
Offensive tackle
Mark Popek was tabbed as one of the top rookie offensive linemen by the Sporting News and on defense cornerback
Kayvon Webster was one of the defensive selections.
Popek has played in every game this season and started each of the last four games.? The 6-7, 305 pound lineman has prototypical size for the position and a wealth of potential.
Webster, a true-freshman, earned six starting nods this season while appearing in all twelve contests. The Monsignor Pace product has 30 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery this season.
The Sporting News is the latest to recognize Webster and Popek who recently picked up similar accolades from ESPN.com's Brian Bennett.
The Bulls will continue preparations and practice for the International Bowl on?Wednesday?at 4 p.m.? Per NCAA rules, USF is allowed to practice 16 times prior to their Jan. 2 bowl game against Northern Illinois.
The USF coaching staff will use the practices to work the young and redshirt players , while also implementing new wrinkles both offensively and defensively.
