Inaugural Hall of Fame Inductee: Michelle Scarborough

Michelle Scarborough

Michelle Scarborough is a four-time All American, Academic All American, two-time National Champion and a National Record Holder.

Do we need to say more about her inclusion in the inaugural USF Hall of Fame Class?

Ok we will...

While at USF her academic achievement in a double-major (math-education) earned her one of the most prestigious scholarships offered at USF.

Michelle Scarborough was a champion in competition and in the classroom. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from USF in 1990 with a B.S. in Education (Joint Program) and a B.A. in Natural Sciences (major:  math).  She was selected as a “Kosove Scholar,” the university's most distinctive scholarship program that provides a full-ride scholarship to students who demonstrate the highest academic standards and a demonstrated commitment to community.

USF CAREER STATISTICS
While stats and records are limited for rifle, which is no longer a sponsored sport at USF, there is plenty of accolades from her time as a National Team member.

Scarborough also received a good amount of media coverage, which is documented below:

From “Keeping Cool Under Fire,” Sports Illustrated
“Of the 31 competitors for the smallbore title, the more coveted of the two individual championships, there were only six women, but three of them finished in the top five. South Florida's Michelle Scarborough defeated West Virginia senior Tammie DeAngelis by the slimmest of margins, 1,165-1,164. . . Scarborough, a South Dakota transplant, won last year's air rifle title, with a record score of 399—she missed only one bull's-eye in 40 shots from a distance of 10 meters.”

Shooting Sports Club Celebrates 25 Years (Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan, March 15, 2008)
“'The South Dakota 4-H Shooting Sports program benefited from the shadow left by Michelle Scarborough, A South Dakota 4-H competitive shooter from Stanley County.  She went on to become a four-time All American and NCAA champion in small bore rifle, before becoming an Olympian,' Reeves said.”

Mountaineers win rifle title: women top shooters
“South Florida's Michelle Scarborough stole the spotlight from team champion West Virginia at the 1989 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships, held March 10-11 at Murray State.  Firing in the final relay during the individual air rifle competition, Scarborough made 34 perfect shots before missing a bulls-eye and finished with a record 399 (400 is perfect).  Only two of her 39 total 10s were close enough to require use of a scoring gauge, and the plug confirmed bulls-eyes both times.”

NATIONAL TITLES
1)            1989 Division I NCAA Championships:   Scarborough won the Air Rifle class with the highest score ever (399, one point short of perfect) using the targets that were in place from 1980-2004.
