TAMPA – Former University of South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul made history tonight when he was selected with the 15th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, becoming USF's highest draft pick ever and the 12th selection in USF history.
Pierre-Paul also became USF's second-ever first-round pick, joining 2008 selection and current Dallas Cowboy All-Pro cornerback Mike Jenkins, who was taken with the 25th overall pick by the Cowboys.
Pierre-Paul made a splash in his one and only season with the Bulls, as the hugely-talented end finished the year with 45 tackles, including a team-high 16.5 tackles for loss, along with 6.5 sacks, seven quarterback hurries, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception return for a touchdown against Syracuse.
Named All-America by Pro Football Weekly, Pierre-Paul also garnered All-BIG EAST First Team accolades by the league's coaches as well as ESPN, Rivals.com and the Sporting News.
Despite arriving late for fall practice, Pierre-Paul wasted little time making an impact on the field, starting with the 17-7 win over No. 18 Florida State on Sept. 26 when he had three tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries.
Pierre-Paul's athleticism gave the 6-6, 265-pounder a huge upside, highlighted by this YouTube video showing Pierre-Paul performing numerous backflips in a row during preparation for the International Bowl in Toronto. Prior to arriving at USF, Pierre-Paul spent two years in junior college, including a year at College of the Canyons then Fort Scott Community College.
The Deerfield Beach, Fla., native is the second USF defensive lineman to have his named called by the NFL commissioner, joining defensive end Shurron Pierson, who was selected in the fourth round in 2003 by the Oakland Raiders.
