TAMPA - With summer workouts now here, the USF football position coaches had a chance to sit down and give a few soundbytes on the players currently with the team after a successful spring season. Each position coach said a few words about the players under their wing.
Today, we check in with wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan and tight ends coach Larry Scott to hear what they had to say about the players at those respective positions.
Check back with GoUSFBulls.com this week and next week for more soundbytes.
Phil McGeoghan, Assistant Coach - Wide Receivers
On Dontavia Bogan
"A great player who has tremendous quickness. A hard worker who gets in and out of his cuts extremely well. An exciting young player who we're looking for great things out of. Comes to practice every day and plays through injury. We're looking for him to be the senior leader and set the tempo for the group. He has a chance to play at the next level."
On A.J. Love
"Is going to work extremely hard to come back. A talented player who is very tough, competitive and plays with urgency. A very intense, focused young man who is going to get back on the field from this ACL injury. He's got some football left in the tank. His leadership will be missed in the beginning part of the season, but we're looking to add that later on during the year."
On Evan Landi
"A converted quarterback who has a lot of ability. Football is very important to him and he takes it very seriously. Catches the ball well, runs goods route and is working on his speed. Is a tremendous competitor who works hard in the weight room. A great player to coach, he does all the right things and everything you ask."
On Sterling Griffin
"Stepped up in big games for us last year. A tremendous competitor who has good speed and is very instinctive. Loves to play the game and loves to compete. A quick learner. We need him to step up and make great gains this year."
On Victor Marc
"A big-body guy who's worked at several positions for us. A very talented athlete who loves to catch the ball in traffic and isn't afraid to turn upfield and gets some yards after contact. A young football player learning the game and getting better."
On Lindsey Lamar
"Lindsey has tremendous upside. A converted running back who has some natural receiver ability. Very, very fast, he's also one of the smartest guys in the room. Very hard on himself as he wants to know everything he can on the position. He's in the office everyday wanting to watch film. That in and of itself will allow him to compete early at the receiver position. He's just a dynamic young man and someone we're really excited about."
On Ed Alcin
"A really smooth athlete and a guy who has a lot of athletic ability and athletic gifts. He's a good route runner and has a good knowledge of the game of football."
On Derrick Hopkins
"An undersized guy who can really fly. Has a lot of heart, is very competitive and is a tough kid. A guy who we're looking for to make some gains and make a contribution to the team this year whether it be on special teams or at wide receiver. Has good upside."
On Faron Hornes
"A consistent player who has good hands for a little guy. He gets in there and makes difficult catches among bigger athletes. He's got great instincts and a savvyness about him. He's a guy we really like."
On Pat Richardson
"A good player whom we're looking for to step up with this opportunity to compete for some playing time. A good route runner. A solid contributor who's played some for us the past few seasons, but we're looking for him to make the next step this year."
On Jason Sherman
"A physical player who we are looking for to be a physical guy in the run game. He's a guy who can go across the middle and make the tough catches in traffic."
On Tyler Stowell
"Has really great character and works extremely hard. Needs to get stronger, but his commitment and work ethic are going to help him out tremendously. He needs to help us out on special teams if he wants to get out there and compete week-in and week-out."
Larry Scott, Assistant Coach - Tight Ends
On Jeff Hawkins
"Jeff has worked really hard. For the first time this offseason he was healthy and really hit the weights hard. A guy who has really gotten in shape and gotten stronger, it's really made a difference for him."
On Andrew Ketchel
"Andrew is a veteran with the most experience in the group. He's been there and felt what the fire feels like. He's a guy who's going to have to help us this year."
On Andreas Shields
"A young guy who plays extremely hard on the field. A big-time effort guy with a high motor who is still learning and developing. As long as he continues to make good strides, will have a chance of helping us."
On Chase Boswell
"A walk-on who will have some spot duty and have a role on this team."
