Bulls Suffer 4-0 Loss To Miami In NCAA Second Round

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of South Florida women's tennis team returned to action on Saturday taking on Miami (Fla.) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, dropping its second round match to the Hurricanes, 4-0. 

The Bulls duo of senior Lauren Shumate and redshirt sophomore Janette Bejlkova started out the day for the Bulls with their No. 2 doubles match against No. 36 Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn. Shumate and Bejlkova fell to Bartenstein and Eichkorn in eight straight games which gave Miami the 8-0 victory.

No. 16 Junior Irene Rehberger and senior Melissa Koning took on No. 6 Laura Vallverdu and Gaberiella Mejia in the No. 1 doubles position. Vallverdu and Mejia downed Rehberger and Koning 8-1, and with the win Miami earned the 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.

Senior Jessica Zok and junior Natalia Guevara competed in the No. 3 doubles position for the Bulls against Danielle Mills and Claudia Wasilewski. Mills and Wasilewski were up 4-3 before the match was stopped.

Freshman Ecaterina Vasenina started out singles competition for the Bulls with her No. 3 singles match against No. 84 Bartenstein. Vasenina fell to Bartenstein in two straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

No. 43 Rehberger the took on No. 7 Vallverdu in the No. 1 singles position. Rehberger lost to Vallverdu 6-1, 6-1. That gave Miami a commanding 3-0 lead over USF.

Senior Jessica Zok went up against No. 113 Mejia in the No. 5 singles position. Mejia rolled past Zok 6-0, 6-2. With the win Miami earned the 4-0 victory over USF.

Koning competed in the No. 2 singles spot for USF against No. 40 Eichkorn. Koning lost the first set to Eichkorn 6-2 and was down 3-2 in the second set before the match was stopped.

Bejlkova took on Mills in the No. 4 singles spot and fell in the first set 6-4. The two players were tied 5-5 in the second set before the match was stopped.

Guevara went up against Wasilewski in the No. 6 singles spot and Wasilewski beat Guevara in the first set 6-2. In the second set Guevara was up 5-2 before the match was stopped.

USF finishes the season with an overall record of 12-8. Next up for the Bulls will be the NCAA singles and doubles championships which will take place in Athens, Georgia on May 26-31. Rehberger was selected to compete in the NCAA singles championships, while the duo of the Rehberger and Koning were selected to compete in the NCAA doubles championships.
