WoMen's Tennis Falls 6-1 at No. 17 Southern Cal
February 11, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The No. 27 University of South Florida's women's tennis team experienced a rocky start to its West Coast trip on Thursday, falling 6-1 to Southern California at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. With the setback, the Bulls drop to 1-3 on the year, but have played four teams ranked among the top 30 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
“We had a chance to get the doubles point after dropping the first match,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “When neither of the other two matches went our way, it seemed to get worse from there. Days like this happen, and we have to rebound and get ready for San Diego on Monday.”
The Bulls leave Los Angeles for the short trek to the University of San Diego where they play Monday at 1 p.m. ET.
The lone winner for USF was Loreto Alonso Martinez at No. 3 singles. She defeated Allison Ramos 7-6, 6-3 in the final match to conclude of the day. Martinez is now 2-2 in dual matches on the year.
In other singles action, ITA's No. 3 player Maria Sanchez dropped No. 24 Irene Rehberger 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 10 Danielle Lao defeated Ecaterina Vasenina 6-1, 7-1 at No. 2. In the No. 4 spot, Janette Bejikova fell to No. 114 Kaitlyn Christian, while Alessandra Bonte lost to Valeria Pulido in the No. 5 spot. Kate Parker also dropped her match, 6-1, 6-2, to Cristala Andrews.
In doubles play, neither of USF's ranked pairings could snag a win as the No. 25 Bejikova-Martinez tandem fell 8-6 to No. 11 Pulido and Ramos in the top spot and the No. 45 Rehberger-Vasenina pairing came up short 8-2 vs. the No. 80 team of Christian and Sanchez at the second doubles spot. USF's freshman tandem of Parker and Bonte battled to a tough 8-5 win vs. Lyndsay Kinstler and Lao in the final doubles match.
