Bulls Finish Eighth at UCF Challenge

The University of South Florida women's golf team earned an eighth-place finish Tuesday at the UCF Challenge, held at the par-72, 6,319-yard RedTail Golf Club outside Orlando. The Bulls carded a final-round 300 to finish at the tournament with a 31-over 895. Coastal Carolina was crowned champion at three-over, one stroke ahead of runner-up Tulane.
“Overall, I'm pleased with the consistency of our play this week,” USF head coach Marci Kornegay said. “It was a good first event of the spring for us and hopefully it will set the pace for us as we were able to beat some higher ranked teams.
Three Golfweek top 50 teams finished below the Bulls, including No. 31 Ole Miss, No. 47 East Carolina and No. 50 Baylor.
Shena Yang was the top finisher for the Bulls in a tie for 11th, narrowly missing a top-10 finish at 1-over par for the tournament. Yang's final round was her best as she carded a 2-under 70 that included five birdies. It was her fifth round of the season at or below par.
Emily Van Etten earned a tie for 28th place after posting a four-over 76 on Tuesday. Her three-round total of 224 strokes was a career low score.
Kelli Pry and Karli Heimbecker also posted career-low scores at the tournament. Pry finished in a tie for 47th at 228 after shooting a 7-over 79 on Tuesday. Heimbecker finished tied for 50th at 229 after carding a four-over 75 in the final round.
Ana Lopez posted an 85 on Tuesday to finish tied for 69th at 236.
The Bulls return to action on Feb. 27 at the Cards Challenge in Weston, Fla.
