February 16, 2011 | Men's Golf
University of South Florida junior Devin Patel has more than just an undefeated match play record to show for his efforts last weekend at The Match Play, hosted by USF at the TPC Tampa Bay. On Wednesday, Patel was named this season's first BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week for his performance in the Bulls' opening tournament of the spring season.
Patel went 4-0 in his matches and helped USF to a tie for second place as a team. It was the highest finish for the Bulls at a tournament in more than four years. The squad notched wins over BIG EAST foe Cincinnati, along with Cleveland State and Morehead State.
Patel did not play more than 16 holes in any match, starting the weekend with a 3-and-2 win over Joe Gasser of Ball State and a 6-and-4 win over the Bearcats' Spencer Mellon on Friday. He continued to coast to victories on Saturday, winning 5-and-4 over Cleveland State's Jonathon Riemer and 4-and-3 over Morehead State's Alex Wright.
The Bulls return to the links on Monday, February 21 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Alabama at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
