February 22, 2011 | Men's Golf
The University of South Florida men's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place after playing two rounds of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Monday at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course. The Bulls carded rounds of 300 and 295 to finish the day at 19-over 595. Middle Tennessee is in the lead at 1-over 581.
“I am very proud of our team's performance today,” USF head coach Chris Malloy said. “We put ourselves in a position to make a run at winning this tournament and continuing to build on the momentum from our last event. “
“It is great to see this group gaining confidence as the tournament goes along. However, we need to reduce the amount of unforced errors that we made today to give ourselves a shot at victory. We will learn a lot about where we are as a team in tomorrow's round.”
Rick Kittelstad posted the low round of the day and his lowest score of the year with a 4-under 68 on his second trip around the links. Kittelstad's round was driven by six birdies including three-straight on holes five, six and seven. The junior is tied for 14th overall entering Tuesday's final round, rebounding nicely from a first-round 79 during morning play.
“I am very pleased to see Rick step up and respond after a slow start,” Malloy said. “To shoot 68 on this golf course in these conditions is a great round of golf.”
Devin Hernandez and Aaron Fitzpatrick are tied for 22nd at five-over 149. Hernandez opened the day with a 1-over 73, and then posted a 76 in the afternoon. Fitzpatrick opened with a 77, but made it around in even-par 72 for his second round.
Bodi Karsono carded a 1-under 71 for his first round, but struggled en route to an 82 during the second round. He is tied for 49th entering play on Tuesday. Devin Patel, coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend at The Match Play, posted two 79s and will be positioned in a tie for 68th when the final round begins.
The Bulls tee off with Kentucky and Mississippi State at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
