Bulls Drop Match at Texas, 5-2
February 26, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The No. 47 University of South Florida women's tennis team dropped another tough road match at Texas on Friday, falling 5-2 to the No. 33 Longhorns in Austin. The Bulls drop to 2-6 with the loss, but all six losses have come against teams ranked in the top 50 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the time of the match.
“We had a match point in doubles and a match point in singles that would have given us the match,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “It was a good experience for us, playing in front of such a large crowd, but it hurts a lot to lose this one.”
USF's top three players were all in tightly-contested matches when the fourth point was lost. Janette Bejikova, ranked No. 62 by ITA, won a third-set tiebreak to defeat Maggie Mello 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 in the No. 3 spot and improve her dual match record to 5-3. No. 52 Irene Rehberger was one game from defeating No. 18 Aeriel Ellis in the No. 1 spot, but ultimately fell 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. No. 124 Ecaterina Vasenina was the last to finish her match, a 6-4, 6-7, 10-9 win over Krista Damico in the No. 2 spot.
The difference in the match came at the bottom of the lineups, where USF has struggled on the road. Loreto Alonso Martinez dropped her match to Amanda Craddock, 6-4, 6-4, while Alessandra Bonte battled early in a 7-5, 6-0 loss to Juliana Gajic. Kate Parker also fell in her match 6-2, 6-0 to Caroline Larsson.
In doubles play, Parker and Bonte earned an 8-5 victory over Gajic and Larsson, but the top two tandems couldn't hang on in a pair of hard-fought matches. Rehberger and Vasenina fell 8-6 to the No. 50 pairing of Craddock and Cierra Gayton-Leach, and Vasenina and Alonso Martinez dropped what could have been a pivotal match with Damico and Ellis, 9-8.
USF plays No. 28 Arizona State in Austin on Saturday before returning home for five consecutive matches beginning March 6 at 12 p.m. vs. Florida State.
