Yang One Stroke Back at Cards Challenge
February 28, 2011 | Women's Golf
The University of South Florida women's golf team remains in a tie for ninth place after shooting a 25-over 313 on Monday at the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge, held at the par-72, 6,106-yard Weston Hills Golf Course outside Miami, Fla. The Bulls two-round total of 624 is 19 strokes behind leader Florida International.
Sophomore Shena Yang posted another solid score at even-par 72 and sits one stroke behind leader Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville entering Tuesday's final round.
“Shena did a nice job of playing consistently and giving herself a chance to win the tournament tomorrow,” USF head coach Marci Kornegay said. “She had a birdie, a bogey and 16 pars. Tomorrow will be a great experience for her and she'll be able to learn and grow as a player and a competitor.”
The remaining Bulls are demonstrating some inconsistency as the tournament moves forward. Karli Heimbecker struggled to an 81 on Sunday but rebounded with a 76 in the second round and currently sits in a tie for 37th place. Similarly, Emily Van Etten posted an 83 on Sunday but finished Monday's round with a 79. She is tied for 56th through 36 holes.
Ana Lopez was the second-lowest scoring Bull in the first round with a 77, but she circled the links in 87 strokes on Monday and is now tied for 61st overall. Kelli Pry posted an 86 in her second round to go with an 83 in the first round and sits in a tie for 70th.
“Despite some windy conditions, we had a few solid rounds today,” Kornegay said. “Ana and Kelli got in trouble with water hazards on a couple of holes and that really hurt their scores. I'm optimistic that we will post some lower scores tomorrow if we stick with and trust our game plan.”
The Bulls' final round begins at 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The team is teeing off holes 11-14 and playing the round with N.C. State and Mississippi State.
