USF Wins 5-2 over No. 15 Notre Dame
March 15, 2011 | Women's Tennis
The No. 42 University of South Florida women's tennis team picked up a big win on Tuesday at the USF Varsity Courts, defeating No. 15 Notre Dame 5-2. The win is USF's third over a ranked opponent this season and its second win in as many days against a BIG EAST opponent.
“I thought our schedule this year made us tougher, and it showed today,” USF head coach Agustin Moreno said. “Even after dropping the doubles point, we came out fighting and won the first set on all six courts. It is a great win for us.”
The Bulls looked in for a tight match during doubles play, but stormed onto the courts in singles and picked up five wins in a row, all in straight sets. No. 106 Ecaterina Vasenina clinched the match for the Bulls with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 95 Kristen Rafael on Court 2. Vasenina is 11-2 on the year and has claimed her last nine matches.
Loreto Alonso Martinez put USF on the verge of victory with her 6-1, 6-2 win over Chrissie McGaffigan on Court 4. Martinez has now won three-straight matches and is 7-6 in dual match play.
Kate Parker picked up her second win in as many days on Court 6, defeating Johanna Manningham 6-0, 6-4 to give USF its second point. Parker started the season 0-11, but has won both of her BIG EAST matches this season.
No. 43 Irene Rehberger was first in the win column for the Bulls defeating No. 32 Shannon Matthews 6-2, 6-0 on Court 1. The win was Rehberger's third this season over a ranked individual.
Alessandra Bonte secured an additional point after the match was decided, winning over Julia Sabacinski, 6-4, 6-4, but No. 76 Janette Bejlkova fell in a third-set tiebreaker to No. 112 Jennifer Kellner, 1-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Notre Dame picked up its other point during doubles play as USF managed only one win at No. 2 by Rehberger and Vasenina over McGaffigan and Rafael 8-7 (7-2). That victory came after losses by the No. 42 Belkova/Martinez tandem and the Parker/Bonte pairing. Bejlkova and Martinez dropped their No. 1 match vs. No. 26 Frilling and Matthews, 8-6, while Parker and Bonte lost 8-4 to Kallner and Sabacinski at No. 3.
USF plays its third match in three days on Wednesday as the Bulls host Tennessee at 11 a.m. The match will be played in conjunction with the men's match vs. Auburn at 12 p.m. Admission to all USF tennis matches is free.
