Sophomore will see second career start in season opener vs. FAMU
TAMPA, AUG. 24, 2015 – USF Head Coach Willie Taggart has named sophomore Quinton Flowers (Miami) the Bulls' starting quarterback for the season opener Sept. 5 vs. Florida A&M. That game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. in Raymond James Stadium and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the USF/IMG radio network.
Flowers, who was a three-time team MVP at Miami Jackson HS, will make his second career start in the season opener. He played in five games during his true freshman season last year and made his first career start in the Bulls' victory at SMU last season.
Flowers and senior Steven Bench (Cairo, Georgia) had been in competition for the starting job since the spring.
Rated a four-star recruit by Scout, Flowers ran for 73 yards and passed for 111 in limited playing time in his first season at USF. He worked hard to mold his body during the spring and summer, cutting his weight from 217 to 210 entering the 2015 campaign.
The versatile dual-threat quarterback accounted for 1,349 yards passing, 641 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns during his senior campaign at Jackson. He compiled 6,042 yards passing and 2,002 yards rushing with 32 touchdowns during his prep career.
Taggart also announced that senior punter Mattias Ciabatti (Tampa), senior defensive end Eric Lee (Daphne, Ga.) and senior tight end Sean Price (Citra) were named captains by a vote of their teammates. They will represent the special teams, defensive and offensive units, respectively.
USF returns 13 starters (5 offense, 7 defense and 1 specialist) for Head Coach Willie Taggart's third season at the helm. The Bulls will return their top five tacklers (9 the top 12 overall) and players that accounted for 73 percent of the team's tackles in 2014. USF returns 100 percent of its rushing yardage from 2014, including 1,000-yard rusher Marlon Mack, and 50 percent of its receptions and receiving yards.
The USF Football program is in its 19th season overall and 16th at the FBS level. The Bulls have made six bowl appearances, including every season between 2005-10, and have four bowl game victories. USF has produced 14 All-America selections, 25 NFL Draft picks and reached the No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press Poll in 2007.
