TAMPA, NOV. 20, 2016 – The University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida on Sunday unveiled the War On I-4 trophy, which will be presented annually to the winner of the rivalry game between two of the nation's largest universities beginning with Saturday's noon kickoff in Raymond James Stadium, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
Jointly designed by representatives from each university and manufactured by Levy Marketing Awards in Tampa, the traveling trophy measures 4-foot-3-inches and weighs 160 pounds with a detachable, pewter replica of the iconic I-4 road sign. The two different sides of the road sign are emblazoned with “Tampa” and “Orlando,” representing the metropolitan areas that together form the fourth largest media market in the nation and are connected by a 100 short miles of Florida Interstate I-4.
The trophy will make several stops around the Tampa Bay area and Orlando this week leading up to Saturday's clash at Raymond James Stadium. Fans can view the trophy first-hand and take pictures with it before Saturday's game in the Bulls Zone, located near stadium Lot 6 outside of the south end zone. The trophy will be present on the sidelines during Saturday's game. The winning team will lay claim to the trophy and take it to their campus to display for one year.
The War On I-4 rivalry and the traditional name, first established by the fans, was officially recognized by both Universities in September. Saturday's football game is part of an annual scored competition across multiple sports programs.
The Black & Gold currently leads the Green & Gold, 15-9, for bragging rights in the year-long competition with the winners in each of 14 sports scoring toward a final tally for each program. The winning university will take possession of trophy to display on their campus for the following year.
Total points are tallied and announced throughout the year. Score updates and, competing teams and a point break-down can be viewed on the War on I-4 website (www.War-On-I4.com). The overall winning school will be presented the overall War On I-4 trophy following completion of the last scored competition in the spring semester.
