TAMPA (Aug. 17, 2017) — The University of South Florida women's soccer program kicks off the 2017 regular season at home Friday night against Charlotte at 7 p.m.
 
The Bulls finished the 2016 season 12-4-3, outscoring opponents, 36-21. USF made national news, holding the longest perfect record in the country with eight-straight wins and reached the best ranking in program history at No. 14. The Bulls return nine players with 15 or more games of experience last season.
 
USF faced FGCU and Troy in preseason tests. The Bulls tied the ASUN champions, FGCU, 2-2 with goals by sophomore Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) and freshman Leah Ferlin (Jacksonville, Fla.). Hauksdottir put the Bulls on the board in the 24th minute, scoring off a free kick. Freshman Leah Ferlin would even the score in the 71st minute with an assist by fellow newcomer, Sabrina Wagner (New Port Ritchey, Fla.)
 
The Bulls defeated Troy 2-0 in its final preseason exhibition. The American Offensive Player of the Year, sophomore Evelyne Viens (L'ancienne-Lorette, Canada), tallied her first goal of preseason when defender Yasmine Hall found her in the 18th minute. Not long after, Ferlin connected with sophomore Kylee Burroughs (Plant City, Fla.) to post the final goal of the night in the 39th minute.
 
The Opponent
Conference USA Champion, Charlotte, returns six starters from 2016 and welcomes nine newcomers to the squad. Senior Martha Thomas (Weston, Fla.) and sophomore Megan Greene (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) were leading goal scorers for the 49ers in 2016, each with 10 goals. USF and Charlotte have met nine times, with Charlotte leading the series, 5-3-1.
 
Notables
  • Ferlin scored in both preseason exhibitions as sophomores Hauksdottir and Viens scored one goal each.
  • In 2016, head coach Denise Schilte-Brown reached her 100th win at USF with an overtime victory against ECU.
  • This will be Schilte-Brown's 11th year at the helm of the Bulls.
  • Six starters return this season.
  • As a freshman, Evelyne Viens tied the school record for goals in a season, recorded a hat trick, and was named American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, first team all-conference and was an all-rookie team selection.
  • USF has a lot of fresh faces this season with 17 newcomers.
