USF Women’s Tennis Drops Match to No. 7 Georgia Tech, 4-1

The Bulls fell to No. 7 Georgia Tech Saturday morning.

TAMPA (Jan. 27, 2018)— The USF women's tennis fell to No. 7 Georgia Tech in a tough feat, 4-1.

The Yellow Jackets took the doubles point to put them ahead at the start of singles play. On court six, Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) defeated Nadia Gizdova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Evelyne Tiron (Romania) lost to No. 89 Ida Jarlskog on court three in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Vanja Klaric (Serbia) also fell her to opponent, Victoria Flores, in straight set, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Yellow Jackets.

Ana Roman Dominguez (Spain) lost to No. 49 Paige Hourigan by retirement, 6-4, 4-1, due to injury.

In doubles, Mjos and Roman fell to Hourigan and Gizdova, 6-3 on court three spot. On court 1, Jarlskog and Johnnise Renaud beat Nicole Dzenga (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Klaric to clinch the doubles point.

Dzenga went to a third set in the five spot, but the match went unfinished as well. Chaves also went unfinished against No. 79 Johnnise Renaud.

Jessica Cortes Chaves (Monterrey, Mexico) and Tiron were ahead on court two against Victoria Flores and Nami Otsuka, but went unfinished by the end of doubles.

"I thought we played a very good match against a top 10 team. We had chances to take the doubles point and were in 5 out of 6 singles matches," said head coach Cristina Moros. "They were more tough than us when it counted the most. In order to beat a great team you need to believe you are a great team and I can see we are starting to get there. Looking forward to competing again tomorrow. Also credit to Alex at number 6 to take care of singles on her first dual match ever."
