Athletics posts record term GPA, seventh straight term over 3.0

TAMPA, JUNE 14, 2018 – Nearly 450 USF student-athletes posted a record combined grade-point average following completion of the 2018 spring term as Bulls student-athletes logged a record seventh straight term with a combined GPA over 3.0.
 
USF student-athletes combined to post a record term GPA of 3.11 in the spring with 12 of 17 teams posting a 3.2 GPA or better. USF saw 13 teams post better than a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the completion of the 2017-18 academic year as the department logged a combined annual GPA of 3.07, marking the third straight year over 3.0. 
 
"We are very proud of the work our student-athletes are doing in achieving excellence the classroom," USF Interim Director of Athletics Scott Kull said. "Hats off to our terrific academic support staff and coaches for putting our student-athletes in a position to achieve their academic goals and championing a culture where posting combined GPAs above a 3.0 has become the expectation and the norm."
 
imageOver 60 percent of USF student-athletes earned a spring term GPA above a 3.0 and 60 percent hold a cumulative GPA over 3.0 following completion of the 2017-18 academic year. The Bulls saw 73 student-athletes earn degrees in 2017-18 and 179 over the last two years.
 
The women's golf team led all USF sports programs with a cumulative GPA of 3.53 after the spring 2018 term, while the women's cross country team posted a spring term GPA of 3.54 term to lead all programs. Every women's team posted a 3.2 or better cumulative, term and annual GPA after the spring 2018 term. Women's teams combined for an annual GPA of 3.39 in 2017-18. The men's cross country team posted a 3.43 GPA in the spring and also holds a 3.43 cumulative GPA after the spring 2018 term to lead all men's programs.

USF Athletics sponsors 19 varsity men's and women's teams that compete in 11 different sports, 18 at the NCAA Division I level in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls' athletic program celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015, having begun with a men's soccer contest in 1965. Nearly 500 student-athletes train and compete in the athletic district located on the east end of the campus in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls have claimed 15 American Athletic Conference team titles since joining the conference in 2013, including four in 2016-17, and own 112 conference championships overall. Ten USF programs reached national post-season competition in the 2016-17 season and nine were ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The Bulls posted a program-record 86 percent Graduation Success Rate in 2016, have logged an annual department grade-point average over a 3.0 for the seven straight semesters, and have seen 179 student-athletes earn their degrees since the fall of 2016.
