Thomas Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

TAMPA, JULY 26, 2018 – Senior safety Jaymon Thomas (Immokalee) has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List as he joins teammates Marcus Norman (Outland Trophy) and Mitchell Wilcox (Mackey Award) on national award watch lists entering the 2018 season.
 
The Wuerffel Trophy is presented to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The award is presented by the All Sports Association based in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
 
Thomas brings a 3.48 grade-point average in health sciences into his senior season. He has been active in numerous community service engagements, including Boys and Girls Club of Tampa, Tampa Parks and Recreation KABOOM! Playground build, speaking to kids at Bethune Education Center in his hometown of Immokalee, Sulphur Springs Elementary School Field Day and road side clean-ups.
 
Thomas brings 106 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception into his final campaign. He posted 44 tackles for the Bulls last season a year after finishing fifth on the team with 55 tackles as a sophomore. Thomas grabbed his first career interception in the Bulls' victory over Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl and posted a career-best 10 tackles in USF's victory at UConn.
 
Thomas is one of three senior starters returning in the USF secondary. He is joined by nickel back Ronnie Hoggins (Coconut Creek) and cornerback Mazzi Wilkins (Tampa). USF ranked second in the nation last season with 20 interceptions.
 
USF begins fall camp on Aug. 3 and will open the 2018 season on Sat., Sept. 1 with a 6 p.m. kickoff vs. Elon in Raymond James Stadium.

USF posted its second straight 10-win season in 2017 (10-2) by winning its second straight Birmingham Bowl with a 38-34 victory over Texas Tech. USF is one of just 15 teams nationally to win 20-plus games in the last two seasons (21-4) and posted a program-record 20 straight weeks ranked in the top 25, reaching as high as No. 13 in Week 8 of the 2017 season. The Bulls have won five of their last six bowl appearances and made nine (6-3) total bowl appearances in 21 seasons, including a current run of three straight bowls. USF won a program-record 11 games in 2016 (11-2) and has posted 14 winning seasons. The USF program, which first took the field in 1997, reached No. 2 in the rankings in 2007 and has seen 30 players selected in the NFL Draft, 14 named All-American and had 28 first-team all-conference selections.
