GAINESVILLE, Fla., Nov. 14, 2019 – Following its second American Athletic Conference championship in three years, the University of South Florida women's soccer team heads into the NCAA Tournament with a road matchup against the Florida Gators on Friday.
The Bulls took down No. 8 Memphis, 2-0, to win the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Nov. 10. Senior forward
Evelyne Viens (L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec, Canada) scored two goals, while
Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.),
Lucy Roberts (Cheshire, England) and
Aubrey Megrath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) all tallied assists. Sophomore
Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) recorded a shutout in net, making one save to keep her clean sheet.
Viens, Martinez, Nasello and
Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) were all named to the all-tournament team. Viens was named the tournament's most outstanding offensive player, while Martinez was named the most outstanding defensive player.
Following its wins over UCF and Memphis, the Bulls rose to No. 11 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings and No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Florida (11-8-1)
Florida enters the NCAA Tournament with an 11-8-1 record this season. The Gators fell, 3-1, to Arkansas in the SEC Tournament in its last match.
Florida is led by senior forward Vanessa Kara, who has 10 goals, one assist and 21 points on the year. Three other Gators also have double-digit point totals, with Parker Roberts tallying 14, Cassidy Lindley with 13 and Deanne Rose having 12. In net, Florida has been led by redshirt junior Susi Espinoza posting a 1.33 goals-against average and a 0.707 save percentage.
In the regular season, Florida defeated USF, 2-0, in the opening weekend of the season at Corbett Stadium.
