USF Returns to the Bay for Back-to-Back Home Games
TAMPA, Feb. 1, 2019 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team will be facing off against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 2 at noon, and the University of North Florida on Sunday, Feb. 3 at noon, in back-to-back home games at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Ana Roman Dominguez (Burgos, Spain), will look to extend her 5-0 unbeaten streak after being named The American Player of the Week for the second week in a row. The Senior had an epic straight-set win over No. 1 Katarina Jokic (Novi Grad, Bosnia), 6-1, 6-2, from No. 5 Georgia last weekend in the ITA Kick-Off event in Athens, Ga. During the weekend the Bulls dropped their opening match against the host Bulldogs (2-0), but defeated William and Mary, 5-2.
Scouting the Opponent:
Middle Tennessee
The Blue Raiders (1-3) are entering this matchup with one win against Lipscomb. Middle Tennessee went 19-8 in 2018, led by their only senior Maria Josefina Zehnder (Rafaela, Argentina). This season, the Blue Raiders are led by Lidia Burrows (West Yorkshire, Englnd), who boasts the best record on the team, 2-2, in singles. Middle Tennessee's top doubles team, Costanza Magazzini (Pistoia, Italy), and Zani Barnard (Midstream, South Africa), are undefeated with a 3-0 record.
UNF
UNF finished its 2018 campaign as ASUN champions, but fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This year, the Ospreys (2-0) are undefeated with shutout wins against FAMU and Georgia Southern. UNF's Rafaela Gomez (Guayaquil, Ecuador), returns to the top court this season as a senior after a 9-9 mark in 2018. She heads to Tampa with a 1-0 start of the 2019 season.
