TAMPA, March 8, 2019 –The Bulls notched a 4-3 win over No. 38 Tulane in the teams' first competition since the Bulls fell, 4-3, to the Green Wave in the 2018 American Athletic Conference championship last season. With the win, USF extended its undefeated home record to 6-0.
USF's (7-4) exciting win over Tulane came down to the last court where senior
Alberto Barroso-Campos (Montijo, Spain) clinched a 4-3 win for USF on court one when he took down Ewan Moore, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-1, for his 10
th singles win this season.
The intensity of the match was there from the very start as the reigning American Athletic Conference champion and runner-up battled. Every court mattered and the doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court one after USF and Tulane split courts two and three.
Jakub Wojcik (Delray Beach, Fla.) and
Ivan Yatsuk (Minsk, Belarus), posted a 6-2 win on court two and Tulane answered with a 6-4 victory on court three over
Chase Ferguson (Melbourne, Australia) and
Sergio Gomez Montesa (Valencia, Spain).
The nation's No. 77 doubles pair,
Pierre Luquet (Draguignan, France) and Barroso-Campos, battled to clinch the doubles point, winning the tiebreaker set 7-6 (3).
Tulane picked up court four over Wojcik in a 6-1, 6-2 victory for the first singles point of the match, and added wins on courts three and two. The Green Wave took down Luquet, 6-4, 6-4, and Ferguson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, to jump ahead, 3-1.
USF would need to win all three remaining courts to preserve their undefeated home streak. Gomez Montesa challenged his opponent to two straight tiebreakers to claim a win on court six, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), and the Bulls tied the match when Yatsuk cleaned up court five going to three sets, 7-6 (2),6-7(2), 6-4.
No. 29 Barroso-Campos clinched the win in dramatic fashion when he dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but fought to win the next two, 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-1.
Quotable
Head coach, Ashley Fisher, on defeating the reigning AAC Champions..
"The energy the guys brought today was absolutely amazing. Seeing the way the boys are communicating and bringing to life optimism and professionalism is so rewarding. When we compete like this there aren't many teams that would want a piece of us. So many tough things had to fall in place and this result required input from so many. Just an incredible team effort and as a coaching staff we are so proud of the boys."
