TAMPA, SEPT. 27, 2019ย โ USF Vice President of Athleticsย Michael Kellyย sits down with USF radio hostย Darek Sharpย to talk about numerous notable program topics during Kelly's 17thย Bull Speed Aheadย podcast.
LEAD1 ANNUAL MEETING: Kelly talks aboutย his experience earlier this week at the Lead1 annual fall meeting in Washington, D.C., that included 130 Division I athletic directors along with conference officials, Congress members and industry leaders. Kelly, whoย grewย up in the Washington, D.C., area, also had fun attending a Washington Nationals game during his trip.- CONFERENCE PLAY BEGINS: Kelly previews a big weekย for USF Athletics with a number of teams beginning conference play at home. No. 16 women's soccer (6-2) started its AAC run with a 2-1 win overย Tulsa on Thursday and has another home game against Memphis on Sunday (1 p.m.). Men's soccer also is at Corbett Stadium this week for a battle with UConn on Friday (7 p.m.). Volleyball will host league foes Temple (Friday, 7 p.m.) and UConn (Sunday, noon) at The Corral. Fans can head over to Raymond James Stadium on Saturday to watch head coach Charlie Strong's football team's clash with undefeated SMU. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
BULLS UNLIMITED 2 LAUNCH: Kelly shares his thoughts on an additional, full-time option for program content with USF Athletics launching Bulls Unlimited 2 on the iHeart Radio app, its second 24/7 digital channel. Bulls Unlimited 2 debuted Thursday with live play-by-play coverage of the USF women's soccer team's conference opener against Tulsa from Corbett Stadium. KELLY INTERVIEWS SAAC CO-PRESIDENTS: Kelly spends the final portion of his podcast interviewing USF Athletics' Claire Embry (volleyball) and Harrison Devenish-Meares (men's soccer). Both Bulls are co-presidents of USF's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which provides insight on the student-athlete experience and offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on campus. Embry and Devenish-Meares represent nearly 500 USF student-athletes through SAAC, which makes a big impact when it comes to pushing important initiatives like mental health and environmental awareness.
About USF Athletics
USF Athletics sponsors 19 varsity men's and women's teams that compete in 11 different sports, 18 at the NCAA Division I level in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls' athletic program began in 1965 and is in its 53rdย season in 2018-19. Nearly 500 student-athletes train and compete in the athletic district located on the east end of the campus in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls have claimed 18 American Athletic Conference team titles since joining the conference in 2013, and own 119 conference titles overall. Eleven USF programs reached national postseason competition in the 2018-19 season and six were ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The Bulls posted a combined annual grade-point average over 3.0 for the fourth straight year in 2018-19 and have posted a program record nine straight semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0. USF has had more than 250 student-athletes earn their degree in the last three years.
