February 02, 2020 | Women's Tennis
TAMPA, Feb. 2, 2020 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season to University of North Florida, 4-3. The Bulls move to 2-3 on the season.
Â
Senior Janvhi Clark (Tauranga, New Zealand) and junior Evelyne Tiron (Bucharest, Romania) started off strong for USF by winning their doubles match 6-3. Soon after, sophomore Amelie Boy (Trianon, Mauritius) and junior Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) clinched the doubles match point by defeating Lucia Montano and Ana Paula Melilo, also 6-3.
Â
Up by one as the Bulls took the court for singles action, sophomore Laura Pellicer Perello (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) kept the momentum going for South Florida. Pellicer moved up to court one the first time this season and defeated No.112 Montano in straight sets to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
Â
However, the Ospreys rallied back to close the next three courts in straight sets to give UNF a 3-2 lead. In the decisive match, freshman Lucia Garrigues (Valencia, Spain) dropped her first set, but was able to fight back and win the second set. In the deciding set, Garrigues pushed hard but fell to Kendall Nash, 4-6, clinching the match win for UNF.
Â
Even with North Florida already clinching the win, play still continued on court three between Tiron and Mariotto. Another back-and-forth battle led to another third set, which Tiron took home with a 6-4 win.

Quotable
Head coach Cristina Moros on Sunday's loss:
"North Florida 100 percent deserves the win today. They were better competitors than us at most singles spots. Laura had a great win today playing in the top spot for the first time. Time for the Bulls to get to work and start figuring some things out."
