USF Picks Up Its First Road Win

Bulls defeat North Texas, 4-2, and move to 2-1 against the Mean Green in program history.
TAMPA, FEB. 27, 2020 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team fought hard to earn a 4-2 win over University of North Texas on Thursday.

Strong play helped the Bulls improve to 4-4 on the season and gained their first road win heading into conference play.

Freshman Grace Eland (Manchester, England) and sophomore Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) kicked things off with a strong 6-3 doubles match win. Senior Janvhi Clark (Tauranga, New Zealand) and junior Evelyne Tiron (Bucharest, Romania) clinched the doubles point by defeating North Texas' Sophia Hummel and Kexuan Zhou, 6-4.

After North Texas tied the match at one, USF regained the momentum in singles play with the help of Pellicer winning in straight sets on court one, 6-1, 7-6. Sophomore Amelie Boy (Trianon, Mauritius) then gave the Bulls a 3-1 lead by closing out court two. After dropping the first set, Boy won the next sets, 6-4, 6-2, to defeat Alexandra Heczey.

In the decisive match, Eland dropped her first set, but fought back to win the second. In the third set, Eland closed the court and defeated Zhou, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, clinching the win for the Bulls.

Freshman Lucia Garrigues' (Valencia, Spain) match on court six went unfinished due to the Bulls clinching the win.
