Bulls Fight Hard but Fall to No. 9 FSU in Season Opener
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 26, 2021 – University of South Florida women's tennis team fell short against a No. 9-ranked Florida State in its first match of the season on Tuesday.
Junior
Amelie Boy (Trianon, Mauritius) and senior
Alexandria Mjos (Austin, Texas) dropped their doubles set, 6-1 to the No. 7 doubles pair of Giulia Pairone and Emmanuelle Salas. Soon after, Florida State's Victoria Allen and Petra Hule, ranked No. 50, clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory against sophomore
Grace Eland (Manchester, England) and junior Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain).
The Seminoles clinched the duel for themselves after the first three singles matches ended in their favor, but the Bulls continued to battle on the remaining courts. Pellicer got off to a great start against Hule and took the first set, 6-3, but eventually lost in a tie breaker. Freshman
Grace Schumacher (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) came up big to win her first collegiate match against No. 106 Allen in the three sets. Schumacher dropped the first set, 3-6, and battled to take the second set, 6-4, to bring on a 10-7 win in a tie breaker.
Quotable
Head coach Cristina Moros on Tuesday's loss:
"I was extremely pleased with the way our team played against one of the best teams in the country. It's a great base to start with after not competing for 10 months. For
Grace Schumacher to get her first college win against a top 10 team shows how much of a bright future she has for the Bulls."
