Bulls Fight Hard but Fall to No. 22 Florida in Home Opener

TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 11, 2021 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team fell short against No. 22 Florida in its first home match on Thursday.

Sophomore Grace Eland (Manchester, England) and junior Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) picked up the first doubles court with a 6-2 win over Florida's Sydney Berlin and Amber McGinnis. Soon after, freshman Grace Schumacher (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) and sophomore Margriet Timmermans (Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands) clinched the Bulls first doubles win of the season with a 6-4 win.

The Gators clinched the duel for themselves when the next five singles matches ended in their favor. USF senior Alex Mjos (Austin, Texas) picked up her first singles win of the season in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, on court six to earn the Bulls second point.

Quotable
Head coach Cristina Moros on Thursday's loss:
"It was great to see us play well in doubles and earning that point. Florida came out super solid in singles and we responded to that better on some courts than others. Really nice to see Alex Mjos get that win down the stretch."
