Bulls Take Down FGCU, 5-2

FORT MYERS, Fla., Feb. 13, 2021 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team put on an impressive performance to pick up their second road win of the season against FGCU on Saturday, 5-2.

The Bulls got off to a fast start with freshman Grace Schumacher (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) and sophomore Margriet Timmermans (Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands) winning their doubles set, 6-1. Soon after, sophomore Grace Eland (Manchester, England) and junior Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) clinched the doubles point for the Bulls with a 6-4 victory.

South Florida built off their momentum coming out of doubles and picked up the first three singles courts to clinch the match win. Timmermans closed out court six in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, followed by Schumacher closing out court three in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 defeating FGCU's Sofia Perez. Senior Alex Mjos (Austin, Texas) won the match clinching point on court five winning in three sets, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

The Bulls (2-5) dropped three of the first sets but fought back to force third sets against the Eagles. FGCU (0-2) added points on the board with wins on courts one and four to bring the score to 4-2, but to close the match, Pellicer rallied back after dropping the first set, 6-3, to defeat Emma Bardet in the next two sets, 6-4, 7-6.

Quotable
Head coach Cristina Moros on Saturday's win:
"Great team effort by us today to pull out that win. FGCU always brings out the best in us. Our doubles is really starting to come together and we were able to use that confidence on some of the singles courts. Others we had to fight hard to come back. Really nice to see Alex (Mjos) start to really build some momentum and clinch the win for us."
