CORAL GABLES, Fla., March 17, 2021 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team fought hard, but fell short against a No. 35-ranked University of Miami on Wednesday.
The Hurricanes (6-5) clinched the doubles point by taking sets on court one and two. However,
Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) and
Grace Eland (Manchester, England) got their second consecutive doubles win on court three, 6-4, defeating Miami's Daeveni Achong and Florencia Urrutia.
Miami clinched the duel for themselves after picking up the first three singles matches in straight sets. Even with the match decided, play continued on the remaining courts. The Bulls (5-8) got their first point on the board when
Grace Schumacher (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) defeated her second ranked opponent of the season with a victory over No. 87 Achong in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
On court five, Alex Mjos (Austin, Texas) took the first set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 2-6, and eventually lost in a third set tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 0-1(8-10). After dropping the first set, 6-4,
Margriet Timmermans (Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands) fought her way back to take set two, 7-5 and got her seventh singles win in a third set tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-7).
