TAMPA, Fla., March 28, 2021 – The University of South Florida women's tennis team pick up its first conference win, 6-1, to defeat Tulane on Sunday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Laura Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) and
Grace Eland (Manchester, England) started off strong to take court two doubles, 6-1. Tulane (9-8) was able to take court one, 6-3, causing the doubles point to come down to the final court. All eyes on court three, Alex Mjos (Austin, Texas) and
Margriet Timmermans (Bergen Op Zoom, Netherlands) were down 3-0, but fought back to clinch the doubles point for the Bulls, 6-4.
The Bulls (7-10) used the momentum from doubles and took five out of the six first sets. Timmermans was the first to take a singles court to pick up her seventh win of the season, 6-3, 6-3.
Grace Schumacher defeated Tulane's M.C. Meredith in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 on court two to extend the lead to three. Soon after, Pellicer clinched the match win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, followed by
Evelyne Tiron (Bucharest, Romania) adding another point for South Florida and her fourth singles win, 6-3, 6-1.
As played continued, the Green Wave was able to take court five in a three-set tiebreaker to get their first point of the match. After dropping the first set, 7-5,
Amelie Boy (Trianon, Mauritius) fought her way back to take the second set, 7-5, and eventually took the win a tiebreaker, 1-0(10-3).
