Last-Minute Goal Pushes LSU Past USF, 2-1

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 26, 2021 – A goal in the 90th minute rallied LSU past the University of South Florida women's soccer team, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon. The loss is the Bulls' first in the regular season since Oct. 31, 2019.

Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) made four saves while Syndy Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) scored her second goal in as many games.

LSU opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with Athena Kuehn finding the back of the net off an assist from Rammie Noel. The Tigers would take the lead into the halftime break.

Both teams emerged from the locker room briefly after the half, but were sent back after five minutes of game time because of lightning in the area. After an hour delay, USF came back out strong and drew a PK by forcing a foul. Nasello took the kick and scored to even the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute.

The game seemed destined for overtime until LSU broke away with less than 30 seconds left. Maddie Moreau scored the game-winner with only 23 seconds left to give the Tigers the victory.

Notables
  • Nasello scored on a penalty kick for the second straight game.
  • Kendall Lincoln (Stephens City, Va.) drew the foul which set up USF's penalty.
