MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Jan. 29, 2022) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Xavier on Saturday in the first of two matches this weekend at the University of Memphis' Eldon Roark Tennis Center.

The Bulls (1-2) fell behind early as the Musketeers won the doubles point with 6-4 and 6-1 wins on courts three and two, respectively.

Sierra Berry, Alexandria Mjos, and Margriet Timmermans all improved to 2-1 on the year with victories in the singles competition.

Berry defeated her counterpart from Xavier, handily, 6-2, 6-4, on court two to even the match up at one-all. On court five Mjos cruised to her second win of the season, 6-3, 6-1. Timmermans had an easy time in the first set on court six, winning 6-2, however had some pushback in the second before pulling out a 7-5 victory to close out the day.

Amelie Boy (3-6, 7-6, 6-1) and Laura Pellicer (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) each held leads after the first set, however fell in sets two and three.

Quotable
"Today was a disappointing result but we really put ourselves in great positions on all the courts today, said South Florida head coach Cristina Moros. "(We) just have to get better at closing things out down the stretch. We have a tough task ahead tomorrow but I believe this team will make the necessary adjustments to give us the best chance (to win)."
