DALLAS, Texas (March 20, 2022) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team closed out its weekend trip to the Lone Star State on Sunday with a tough 5-2 loss to No. 42 SMU at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

The Bulls, ranked No. 65 in the most recent ITA rankings, even their record at 8-8 while the Mustangs improve to 11-5.

The Bulls jumped on the Mustangs quickly in doubles, taking court one with a 6-2 win by Rithvik Bollipalli and Bruno Oliveira, before SMU tied the doubles portion up at one match apiece defeating Sergio Gomez Montesa and Alvin Tudorica, 6-4. Ivan Yatsuk and Chase Ferguson secured the point for South Florida with a 7-6 victory at the No. 2 position.

Tudorica got his revenge in singles, in impressive fashion, on court five, 6-3, 6-2 to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, for the Green and Gold that was the last point that they posted the rest of the day.

The Mustangs got a match back in a hard-fought three-set battle on court one, defeating Yatsuk, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to cut the South Florida advantage to 2-1.

SMU continued to keep the pressure on the Bulls coming right back and getting the best of Gomez Montesa, on court four, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to level the dual up at two-all. The Mustangs then took the lead with another three-set victory over Antonio Muniz. Muniz took the first set, 6-3, only to drop the final two sets, 4-6, 2-6, as SMU came within one point of the dual win.

The deciding point for the Mustangs came down to court six and South Florida's Bruno Oliveira. Oliveira won the first set, 6-4, and then found himself involved in a dogfight in the second set that came down to a tiebreaker. Oliveira had set point twice but couldn't put his opponent away falling in the tiebreaker 10-8. He then dropped the final set 6-0.
