
USF Women's Tennis Players, Team Recognized by ITA for Academic Success

TAMPA (July 14, 2022) – University of South Florida women's tennis standouts Sierra Berry, Laura Pellicer, Margriet Timmermans and Selin Yaylali have been named 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Scholar Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In addition, the Bulls, as a team, were named one of the ITA's 2022 Division I Women's All-Academic Teams.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements. Have a grade point average of at least a 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and be listed on the institutional eligibility form.

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements. Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form and all varsity letterwinners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.

Berry (Frisco, Texas) finished the 2022 season with an 11-10 record which included a 9-7 record on court two. She won eight of her first 12 collegiate matches, however, pulled her biggest victory off the season in the American Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals winning the final match against rival, No. 19-ranked and top-seeded Central Florida, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The win secured the Bulls' thrilling 4-3 win over the Knights and propelled South Florida into the semifinals.

Pellicer (Gandia, Valencia, Spain) recorded a 9-6 record on the year in 23 starts in singles. Her nine wins were the third-most on the team during the season and posted a 9-4 record on court three. She also finished the season with a team-best five-match winning streak in matches finished. Pellicer won the deciding point against Temple in the AAC Tournament quarterfinals advancing the Bulls to a semifinal match against Memphis. She won five matches in doubles teaming with two partners – Kiana Mokhtari and Yaylali – both coming on court three.

Timmermans (Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands) played in 21 of South Florida's 23 matches, recording four wins on the year while playing the entire season on either court four, five, or six. She was 9-9 in matches finished on the season in doubles teaming up with Grace Schumacher for all 22 contests in the spring. The duo played the entire season on court two.

Yaylali (Gainesville, Fla.) played the most matches of her collegiate career during the 2022 season, 12 in singles and 14 in doubles. She recorded a 4-9 record in doubles, teaming with Pellicer, all coming on court three, and won all four of her doubles matches in the first seven outings. Yaylali posted two wins in singles on court six, defeating Stetson 6-3, 7-5 and VCU 7-6 (6-4), 6-3 in her singles victories.

South Florida completed the season with a Cinderella run to the American Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals. The Bulls, seeded ninth in the championship, defeated eighth-seeded Temple, 4-3, before knocking off top-seeded Central Florida in the quarterfinals. The Green and Gold had their run ended by fourth-seeded Memphis in the semifinals. Â
