What a difference a week made for the Bulls.
After an uneven, penalty-plagued and turnover-filled scrimmage last week, the Bulls registered a clean, crisp and productive effort Saturday morning in their second and final full scrimmage of fall training camp.
One week ago, the Bulls recorded 15 penalties and four turnovers.
Saturday, it was just three penalties (two offsides) and no turnovers. Zero. The offense moved the ball and scored. The defense responded with big stops and solid tackling in the back-and-forth affair. And, no injuries.
"That's making a big change and being a lot more disciplined in practice,'' head coach Jeff Scott said. "Last year and two years ago, we had big gaps. We had big problems. Some of those were personnel issues. We're not going to have personnel issues. Now it's going to be whether we can execute and do all the little things. I'm encouraged because we had a good finish (to fall camp).''
Wide Receiver Sincere Brown
Quarterbacks Gerry Bohanon and Katravis Marsh each threw a touchdown pass. Bohanon (8-for-12, 44 yards) delivered a 4-yarder to Ajou Ajou, while Marsh (10-for-18, 116 yards) had a 19-yard touchdown strike to Sincere Brown. Meanwhile, true freshman quarterback Byrum Brown went 4-for-4 for 47 yards in spot duty. Brown and Ajou each had five receptions. Michel Dukes had six carries for 43 yards, including runs of 20 and 14 yards, as the Bulls' offensive line cleared the way for an effective run game.
The offense opened the scrimmage with a six-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, culminating in Brian Battie's 17-yard burst up the middle. The offensive line opened a huge hole and Battie quickly got to the second level, then dragged two defenders into the end zone.
Running Back Jason Albritton
Freshman running back Jason Albritton — who continues to show flashes of a Mini Alstott-type runner — had three touchdowns, two in the goal-line drills, along with a 16-yard reception on a swing pass. Albritton, who started as No. 30 as USF, even changed his number to 40, the same worn by Mike Alstott, a six-time Pro Bowl selection who starred for the Buccaneers from 1996-2007.
Big defensive plays were turned in by freshman defensive lineman Michael Williams, who crashed into the backfield to stop Battie for no gain on a third-down play; defensive end Jonathan Ross, who tipped a Bohanon pass on fourth down; cornerback Aamaris Brown and linebacker Dwayne Boyles, who posted touch sacks; and defensive lineman Nick Bags, who had a tackle for a loss on the scrimmage's final goal-line play.
The Bulls will take off Monday — the first day of USF classes — before reporting back to practice on Tuesday morning to begin preparations for the Sept. 3 season opener against No. 25-ranked BYU at Raymond James Stadium.
