Tampa, Fla. | USF Varsity Tennis Courts
Tampa, Fla. (March 25, 2023) – No. 60 USF Women's Tennis defeated the DePaul Blue Demons to secure its sixth straight win.
The Bulls kicked off the day with an energetic start to doubles. South Florida took early leads on courts one and three.
On court one, the reigning AAC Player of the Week,
Sierra Berry, and USF star
Grace Schumacher looked the part against DePaul's Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva. They made quick work of their match, winning 6-3 to secure USF's first win of the day.
On court three,
Marta Falceto Font and
Nadja Bay Christians jumped out to a 4-1 lead. DePaul's Valentina Martin and Maddie Yergler refused to quit, however, scoring the next two points and making it a 4-3 game. In what turned into a hard-fought battle, USF scraped out the next two points, winning 6-3 and giving the Bulls the doubles point.
In singles action, USF's Berry continued to impress. She defeated DePaul's Yuliya Kizelbasheva 6-3, 6-2 to give the Bulls their first singles point.
In her second set, DePaul's Antonijevic forfeited against USF's
Laura Pellicer due to cramps. This gave USF a 3-0 lead on the day.
Grace Schumacher had the chance to put the match away for the Bulls on court two. After winning 7-5 in the first set, Schumacher took a commanding lead in the second set and never looked back. She won the set 6-3 and gave the Bulls their match-clinching fourth point.
With the result already decided, DePaul continued playing for pride. DePaul's Yergler secured a 7-5, 6-3 win on court six, giving the Blue Devils their first point of the day.
The Bulls and Blue Devils split the remaining two courts, with USF's Falceto Font winning 6-3, 7-6 on court four and DePaul's Greta Carbone winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 on court six to make it a 5-2 final score.
The win marked the Bulls' sixth straight win, improving their season record to 10-5.
