USF Cross Country Showcases Growth in the Southern Showcase

The women took 15th and the men 18th at Jacksonville State’s Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala.
Huntsville, Ala., September 13, 2024 – The University of South Florida men's and women's cross country teams continued their 2024 season on Friday, September 12, at the Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala., hosted by Jacksonville State University.
Overall, the women finished 15th out of 49 competing teams with 469 points, finishing ahead of programs like UAB, Memphis, Western Kentucky University, Troy, and Kennesaw State among others.
The women's top finisher in the 5K was junior Giovana Meade (18:11.78), who took 88th in a field of over 450 runners. Senior Sydney Granack also finished in the top 100, taking 99th overall (18:18.14).
The women also had two other runners crack the top 150. Junior Hailey Cohen finished 119th overall (18:30.95) and sophomore Delaney Stephens finished 149th (18:45.47).
Overall, the South Florida men finished 18th out of 47 competing teams with 469 points, finishing ahead of programs like Western Kentucky University, Memphis, and Troy among others.
The men's top finisher in the 8K was sophomore Jackson Dravo (25:30.93), finishing 93rd out of over 450 runners. Junior Karim Belmahdi made his season debut finishing 98th overall (25:36.34).
The men also had two other runners crack the top 150. Freshman John Keester IV took 137th overall (25:53.94) and sophomore Sean Perry finished 142nd overall (25:58.95).
After this meet, the Bulls travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the FSU Pre-regional scheduled for Friday, Sept. 27.

The USF Cross Country team has earned 2 All-America selections, Christina Benton in 2002 and Gray Mavhera in 1994. The Bulls have advanced to the NCAA Cross Country Championships seven times in program history, three times for the men and four times for the women. The USF men's teams have won seven team conference championships and the women have won five team championships. Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2019 and during his tenure the Bulls posted twelve program records and 106 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium, as well as the 2022 AAC Country Cross Country Championship at Holloway Park.
