USF Football's Shuler Named American Player of the Week; Brown Honored Nationally

TAMPA, FLA., OCT. 13, 2025 – South Florida linebacker Jhalyn Shuler and quarterback Byrum Brown earned conference and national recognition following the Bulls 63-36 dismantling of previously unbeaten North Texas on Friday.

Shuler earned American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time on the year after a big game at UNT in which he made a big interception deep in USF territory in the first quarter, scooped and scored a 34-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery and recorded eight tackles and a tackle for loss. Shuler also earned the honor for Week 1 after posting 14 tackles win over No. 25 Boise State.

The Bulls have forced nine turnovers in the last two games, eight by the defense and one on special teams, and now lead the nation with 16 turnovers gained on the year. The Bulls have forced a turnover in 14 straight games, the second longest active streak in the nation.  
 
Brown was named to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 for the third time on the season and also earned Manning Award Stars of the Week recognition and American Conference Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention. He accounted for five touchdowns at UNT as he threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Brown has accounted for 14 touchdowns in the last three games and now ranks No. 7 in the nation accounting for 18.0 points per game.
 
The No. 19-ranked Bulls (5-1; 2-0 American) will look for just the fourth 3-0 conference start in program history Saturday when they take on FAU in a Homecoming clash at Raymond James Stadium. FAU (3-3; 2-1 American) is coming off a 53-33 victory in Boca Raton, Fla., over UAB. The Owls one American Conference loss came at home to unbeaten Memphis, 55-26, in a game that entered the fourth quarter with the Tigers leading 24-19.
 
South Florida has produced 180 points (60 ppg) in the last three games and ranks No. 12 in FBS football posting 40.7 ppg on the season. The three-game run includes a pair of 63-point games, the first time in program history the Bulls have posted a pair of 60-plus point outings in the same season. USF is producing 468.3 yards per game to rank No. 18 nationally and running for 208.3 yards per game to rank No. 24.

ABOUT USF FOOTBALL
The USF football program first took the field in 1997 and completed its 28th season in 2024 with its second-straight bowl victory in the Hawai'i Bowl. Head coach Alex Golesh posted a program-best six-game turnaround and a Boca Raton Bowl victory in his first season in 2023. USF completed construction on a new $22 million Indoor Performance Facility in 2023 and a $340-million on-campus stadium and football operations center broke ground in the fall of 2024 and is slated for completion by 2027. The Bulls have posted 17 winning seasons, earned 16 All-America selections (including two consensus selections, the last coming in 2021), as well as 33 first-team all-conference honorees. USF has had 30 players selected in the NFL Draft and the Bulls have made 12 bowl game appearances (going 8-4), posting a program-record six straight appearances from 2005-2010 and making four straight bowl appearances from 2015-18. USF posted back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2016 and 2017, logging a program-record 11-2 mark in 2016, while finishing both seasons ranked in the Top 25. USF spent a program-record 20 straight weeks ranked in the Top 25 during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns and reached as high as No. 2 in the Associated Press rankings during the 2007 season.
