Will Weatherford
A Message From: Will Weatherford, Chair of the University of South Florida Board of Trustees
To the USF alumni, Bulls fans, and Tampa Bay community:
A new chapter is unfolding for the University of South Florida—and it's one that will define the future of our athletics program for decades to come. As we launch our search for the next leader of USF Athletics, we want to share with you why this moment is different—and why we're not just hiring an athletic director.
We are hiring a
CEO of Athletics.
This new title reflects more than a change in language. It reflects a new era in college sports, and a new vision for USF. In today's world, leading an athletics department is no longer just about managing teams or balancing a budget. It's about building a competitive enterprise, growing revenue, leading through change, and positioning our university—and our region—on the national stage.
The landscape has changed. Dramatically.
Conference realignment has redefined the map of college football. NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) has opened the door for student-athletes to monetize their brands. And revenue sharing with athletes is upon us. In short, college athletics has moved closer to the business model of professional sports.
To succeed in this environment, USF Athletics must be run like a serious business—because it is one. And it's one with the power to unite our community, inspire pride, and bring national attention to Tampa Bay.
But let's be clear: this is not about walking away from what makes college sports special. We remain deeply committed to the student-athlete experience and to providing meaningful opportunities across all sports—including our Olympic sports programs. Education, character, and development remain at the heart of who we are. But we also know that winning, growing, and investing in our future requires a modern approach.
That's where the CEO comes in.
We're looking for a leader who understands both the boardroom and the locker room—someone who can drive revenue, elevate our brand, attract top-tier talent, and embrace innovation. Someone who sees the opportunity in USF and isn't afraid to dream big.
And the timing couldn't be better.
In 2027, we'll open our long-anticipated
on-campus stadium—a transformational project that will energize our fan base, enhance the student experience, and serve as a magnet for recruits, donors, and national attention. This stadium is more than just a facility; it's a cornerstone of our long-term strategy to elevate USF Athletics and solidify our place in the national conversation.
As a university, and as a community, we have momentum. Tampa Bay is one of the most vibrant and fastest-growing regions in the country. Our university is rising in research, rankings, and reputation. And Bulls Nation is more engaged and passionate than ever.
Now, we need a leader who can match that ambition—and help take us to the next level.
We want our alumni and supporters to know: this is a defining moment. Not just for USF, but for the role athletics can play in the life of a great public university. The stakes are higher, the opportunities are greater, and the time to act is now.
Thank you for believing in USF, for standing behind our student-athletes, and for being part of the next great chapter in Bulls history.
We're ready for what's next—and we hope you are too.
Go Bulls!
