30th-Anniversary: Best of the Last Three Decades Series Kickoff
August 30, 2026 | Football
As the University of South Florida football program begins its new era under first-year head coach Brian Hartline, it's also a time to reflect on South Florida's memories, milestones and magical moments from the program's first three decades.
It's the 30th anniversary season for South Florida football. Beginning this Sunday โ and each Sunday that precedes a game week โ GoUSFBulls.com will present an installment of a 12-part series that chronicles the program's greatest games, players, plays, milestones and personalities.
"I immediately think back to the blood, sweat and tears that not only helped start South Florida football back in the early days, but also the people who helped it achieve so many amazing things throughout these three decades,'' South Florida CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins said.ย
"I think this final season in Raymond James Stadium gives us a chance to shine a light on all the memories. We have seven home games scheduled so far, but the goal is having an eighth (American Conference championship game) and really ending it in storybook fashion. Coach Hartline will be the first to tell me to focus on FIU and that first game. But you also think about the hundreds of student-athletes, coaches and support staff who have been with us on this journey. We think it's going to be a unique and powerful celebration.''
For those new to South Florida football, it could also be a unique and powerful education.
* Did you know that South Florida's first football "complex'' was actually a series of trailers dubbed "The Ponderosa?''
* Did you know that when South Florida had its first player taken in the NFL Draft (2001), it began a string of three consecutive Bulls selected, the first and only 1-2-3 picks from any school in draft history?
* Did you know that South Florida ascended to No. 2 in the Associated Press poll in the program's 11th season, the fastest of any program in history?
* Did you know that South Florida was the fastest state of Florida football program to achieve 150 victories?ย
"The South Florida program has such a unique trajectory and that can't be denied,'' Hartline said. "The 30-season mark is a good reminder of how early we are in this process. You look at programs that have been around for more than a century and you see how long it took them to build a fan base, to build a stadium, to build facilities. South Florida has shown glimpses of winning at a high level, but it hasn't done it consistently over time. That's what we're after right now.
"More than referencing the past, I think it's more about the opportunity at hand. I like the comparison angle. The big-time programs, where were they after 30 years? What traditions did they have? How much did they grow in the next 30 years? That's what excites me. This program has a lot of cool accomplishments and history. Now we look forward to building on the foundation that has been laid in the first 30 seasons.''
Stayed tuned to GoUSFBulls.com for each game week installment of the 12-part series starting with โ Essential Games โ as we celebrate the 30th-season anniversary of South Florida football.
