Biography

Steve is currently serving as an Associate Athletic Director in charge of Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa.  Steve oversees all aspects of sports medicine for USF including the day-to-day care of USF Football.  He also has a faculty appointment in the College of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics as an instructor.

A native of Jefferson City, Missouri, Steve received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri in 1992 before moving to Tampa to attend graduate school at USF. Steve has also served as Head Athletic Trainer for the Tampa Bay Storm, clinician at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute, and as an Outreach Program Director at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Kansas City. Steve was USF’s first ever Athletic Trainer for football.

Walz currently serves as President on the executive board of the American Athletic Conference Sports Medicine Society after serving two years as President of the Big East Conference Sports Medicine Society from 2010-2012, and was a past executive board member of the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida. In 2004 and 2013, Steve was named the Outstanding Staff Member for USF and in 2006 was named the Athletic Trainer of the Year by the state of Florida.

Steve and his wife Shelley reside in Tampa and have a 13 year old son, Henry.
