“I don’t know that I need to say much about Coach Tresey, his resume and experience at the BCS level tells the story,” said USF head coach Jim Leavitt.? “We are excited about him joining our staff and we’re excited that we can get right into spring practice with him.”
Tresey is just months removed from helping lead Cincinnati to the 2008 BIG EAST Championship and the 2009 Fed Ex Orange Bowl.
The Bulls offense and quarterback Matt Grothe have to be just as excited to bring the defensive guru into the fold.? Tresey led a Bearcat defense that was able to limit the Bulls to 10 points in 2008 and force eight turnovers in 2007.
Tresey authored a Cincinnati defense that tied USF for the national lead in turnovers and interceptions in 2007. A pair of Bearcat defenders earned all-America honors and two others were selected in the 2008 NFL Draft. UC finished second in the BIG EAST in scoring defense (18.8) and rush defense (114.2) and put five of 11 defensive starters on the all-BIG EAST team.
Tresey joined Brian Kelly's staff at Central Michigan in 2006 and quickly implemented a style that forced 29 turnovers and 31 sacks in 14 games. His MAC Championship defense registered four players with all-league plaudits.
Two seasons prior to joining the CMU staff, Tresey was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Georgia Southern. The Eagles' defense ranked fourth nationally in total defense in 2004. While in Statesboro, Tresey helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA Playoff appearances. He also mentored a pair of all-Southern Conference linebackers.
A 13-year college coaching veteran, Tresey managed the defense and coached defensive backs at Akron during the 2002-03 seasons. He served the previous three years (1999- 2001) as defensive secondary coach at Virginia Military Institute. Tresey began his college coaching career as the defensive coordinator at Otterbein in 1995.
Tresey moved to the collegiate ranks after serving as a decorated high school mentor. After leading Fredericktown to Ohio's Division IV state semifinals in 1989,
Tresey was voted the UPI Ohio Division IV Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Fredericktown High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
No stranger to Southwest Ohio, Tresey served four seasons as head coach at Middletown High School. He also has prior head coaching stops at New Philadelphia (Ohio) High School and Mechanicsburg (Ohio) High School.
Tresey is a 1982 graduate of Ohio State with a bachelor of science degree in education. He earned his master's of education in sports science from Ashland University in 1997.
