Tyler Smith comes to South Florida after working at the University of Tennessee where he served as Assistant Director of Sports Performance for the football program. During his time at Tennessee, he worked with current South Florida Director Head Strength and Conditioning Coach AJ Artis.
Prior to his arrival in Knoxville, Tyler spent a year in the high school ranks at St. Joseph’s Catholic School located in Greenville, South Carolina. There, he served as the head strength and conditioning coach for all sports teams. The girls’ soccer team also won the Class AA State Championship during Tyler’s short tenure as the head and strength and conditioning coach.
Smith’s career in strength and conditioning began when he accepted a role as intern at the University of South Carolina under Coach Jeff Dillman in the spring of 2018.
Smith was a four-year letterman as an Outside Linebacker at South Carolina State University from 2012-16. After redshirting as a freshman, he helped the Bulldogs to a share of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Titles in 2013 and 2014, along with one NCAA Division-1 FCS Playoff appearance. Following his collegiate career Smith signed to play with the Orlando Apollos for the Alliance of American Football League.
Following his stint with the Orlando Apollos, Smith coached high school football at both Airport (2016) and River Bluff (2017) High School, where he worked primarily with Defensive Backs. In 2016 at Airport High School, he had a pair of players selected as both All-Region and All-State players.
Smith and his wife Kalifa are both natives of Columbia, South Carolina and graduates of W.J. Keenan High School. The couple has one daughter, Ava Noelle Smith.
