2015: A four-star recruit from nearby Frostproof, Fla., Cherry originally signed with Texas but elected to transfer back home shortly after the start of fall camp in his first season in Austin…the 6-0, 240-pound linebacker joined the Bulls' camp in August and will sit out the 2015 season under NCAA transfer rules with four years of eligibility remaining.
Victory Christian Academy HS: Cherry was rated No. 12 among inside linebackers in the nation, the No. 46 player at any position in the state of Florida, as well as a four-star recruit by Rivals…he starred in his senior season at Victory Christian Academy playing for coach Tommy Lewis…was named Small School Defensive Player of the Year by the Lakeland Ledger after posting 160 tackles (95 solo), two sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles…a two-time, first team all-county pick, Cherry earned a reputation as one of the hardest hitters in the county after leading the Storm to the 2014 Class 2A state championship…selected No. 1 on Big County Preps’ list of the biggest hitters in their coverage area…selected to the Ledger’s Super 16, Cherry recorded 90 tackles and 4.5 sacks as a junior at Frostproof HS to earn first team all-county honors…started playing varsity football at Frostproof as an eighth-grader…in addition to Texas, Cherry held nearly 35 offers coming out of high school, including from Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
